Class Project
All students will be required to complete a final project. Students may work alone or in groups of two or three. Each project will result in a write-up to appear on the course website and a short in-class presentation. Strong projects should result in novel work worthy of conference publication.
As a starting point, here are some general types of projects.
- Take a recent theoretical paper, read it in detail, and try to improve upon or extend its results. Even improving constants or the presentation of a key proof can be valuable.
- Formalize an open problem, with accompanying literature review and possible avenues for solutions. For examples, see recent COLT Open Problems or Open Problem posts on differentialprivacy.org. (Optional: solve it!)
- A new implementation and evaluation of existing theoretical work.
- Experimental evaluation or practical improvements on a statistical or machine learning task.
