A recipient of the Chancellor’s Scholarship, Will Lokke is many
things: personable, intelligent, hard-working, Hispanic. None of
these things matter, however. On a bitterly cold winter evening
the essence of Will Lokke was distilled into a single anecdote.
Will had never played Ultimate before tryouts this year. That much was obvious as he ran clueless through the fields, at times unaware that a game of Ultimate was happening in his proximity. Yet, he was learning. As tryouts were coming to a close, he had shown the ability to occasionally complete 10-yard backhands and never leave his cutter’s side on defense. Still, he was just another redheaded Hispanic thug from Albuquerque who hadn’t played a day of Ultimate, a dime a dozen. As tryouts drew to a close, he remained distant from the bubble. The bubble forever blew up in one play as Will, hopelessly out of position, took an aggressive angle for the disc and layed out over his man’s shoulder for the sickest layout D seen in months. And that was it. Will Lokke, enigma, bubble player, fringe material, suddenly crystallized into your primary cutter’s worst nightmare. What he was before or what he will be after became inconsequential to the moment, the singular explosion, the definition of his being. Hh |
