About the episode of 7-u'p, Uyn DDa^`u 95,....
This has been a big problem in South Korea. I am studying CS in south
korea always having a difficult time in figuring out whether a word
is orginial korean or a borrowed one. Especially in computer-related
and other scientific fields, terminology are heavily borrowed to an
extent that sometimes almost the whole sentence is cramed with distorted
english. Indeed they have exactly the same version of Uo^t 97 or Uyn Dda^`u
95. Worse yet, once such words get used to a large community they will never
get off the board and same trend will continue with other words even those
with no scientific connection.
Just to give you a little imagination, today such words are so frequent
in korean lips: show -> sa^u-alike, big-> bi'c alike, best-> be't su+` tu+`
........ these are such common words that there are always appropriate
equivalence in their native language but they don't seem to bother using.
Even americans or englishmen who was learning korean with me had bad
time in ironize out the words originally comming from their native tounger.
The korean, japanese lesson should be well aware among us vietnamese
especially those studying abroad. Do you know who is the cause of such
ridiculous wording? As far as i know, it is the korean professionals who
get educated in america the one who play an important role in propagading
the ridiculous Konglish( mixed Korean-english). These folks then returned
and teached at korean universities and would influence their students who
in turn would start this circle in their companies.
For vietnamese language it think we have a better chance in avoiding
such scenario. Since our alphabetical system is roughly equivalent to that
of english, my idea is that we had better let the original word as it is
while trying to find out the best equivalence in vietnamese and
propagating its use as best as we can through mass media. That means
a full awareness from governments and each individuals. This may
sounds extremist nationalistic but if you ever know korean ( and japanese
i think, ca'c ba'c in Japan would clarify this) you would find this
not the case.
And I wonder if someday we will have to be content with a full
Vietenglish at all.
