Hi all,

My American Heritage Dictionary (CD-ROM edition) defines freeway as
follows:

freeway n.
1. See expressway.
2. A highway without tolls.

expressway n. Abbr. expy 
A major divided highway designed for high-speed travel. 

highway n. Abbr. hwy, hgwy
A main public road, especially one connecting towns and cities.

The first two are US English. Perhaps they need so many expressions
because have too many kinds of road?
