This document describes HOW-TO get and install the appropriate SSH client and HOW-TO establish secure connections to CSL Unix computers for FTP, telnet and pop sessions.
CSL Windows NT workstations can NOT be used except by the person physically sitting at the computer. This is not due to CSL policies, but rather the design of the operating system.
This document assumes that you have a network connection; for example: a dial-up connection through WiscWorld or a resnet connection.
Computers that are available for remote connection:
route66.cs.wisc.edu - available for secure ftp to all users (intended especially for use by users with only Windows NT accounts.
best-nova.cs.wisc.edu has been designed to select the workstation with the LOWEST load on the CPU. This is for use by users with an instructional Unix account who are connecting remotely.
best-sol.cs.wisc.edu has been designed to work just like best-nova, but within the sol1-40 workstation group.
nova1-nova40.cs.wisc.edu and sol1-sol40.cs.wisc.edu are available for ssh (secure remote connection) to users with an instructional Unix account.
There is currently no Macintosh SSH program available from DOIT; however, in
the future DOIT will be selling a program called F-Secure, which
is an SSH client for the Macintosh.
