3.4.5.2 GIMP: the GNU Image Manipulation Program

The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It is an extremely capable piece of software with many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, a expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, a image format converter, etc.

3.4.5.3 gv: postscript and pdf viewer

gv allows the user to view and navigate through PostScript and PDF documents on an X display by providing a user interface for the ghostscript interpreter.

ImageMagick is a GUI grapics editor to modify graphics files of various formats. ImageMagick is also capable of generating animated images from a series of still images.

NetPBM is a collection of command-line programs to convert various graphics image files to or from a variety of graphic formats.

Xfig is a menu-driven tool that allows the user to draw and manipulate objects interactively under the X Window System.

3.4.5.7 xv: graphics viewer and editor

xv is a GUI graphics viewer and editor. xv runs a bit faster than ImageMagick, but has a more limited number of supported graphics formats and editing capabilities.
