Andy P. Davies (ShiftyMurphy@hotmail.com)
Hello Matt and all the friends of The Nips,
My band is called The Winnebago Orchestra and we have just released a very vibrant version of 'Gabrielle' on our new CD which is entitled 'Hommage Frais'. It is ace!
I love The Nips and songs like 'Happy Song' 'Maida Ada' and 'Vengeance' most especially make me smile. Shane once asked me if I thought the latter was sexist, my girlfriend immediately announced that it was most definately sexist and he should be ashamed of it. Shane looked sheepish and said he agreed. Self-critique and the dialectical process is a good thing.

Hi everyone! A new Nips live show has surfaced, live at the Hope & Anchor. It includes two new songs, Loot and Eltham. I'm leaving for a two week vacation soon, but full details when I return!

Fritz aka Gavin D. (Gavinscompok1ATaol.com)
I Think Johnie Dionysus, is right it was him who wrote the "sublime" Gab Gab Gabrielle in a past life. who gives a F*** anyway. Thank christ that Shane is still with us and long may he write great songs.

love the site it needs to be licensed to cool, but where have all the audio files gone? (that ain't cool)
Its great to see Fritz aka Gavin D is still alive and picking, despite the life of druggery! opps I mean "drudgery". It was so long ago and with all that rhythm & booze I thought it was me that wrote gab gab gabrielle and ghost town. Yeah the nips always were outrageous Stan, thats what made them great.

My apologies to anyone who thought i was claiming to have co-written Gabrielle, the reference was made to "Ghost Town" which was recorded at the session for Polydor and produced by Paul Weller.
Gavin.

Yes, it's a shame I had to remove the mp3s, especially for a copywrite that no one seems to get royalties for anyway! Thanks everyone for the compliments... and Kirk, try and get in touch with Andy, a few messages back. Cheers and Happy New Year! - MR.
-Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 20:59:54 (CST)
Stan Brennan (brennan100@btconnect.com)
Well I produced the Nips and I don't get any royalties either. Gavin could try contacting my old partner in Soho who ended up with the rights. I think it's outrageous though that Gavin is claiming he co-wrote the sublime Gabrielle!!!!!!!

Mike Jackson (michael.g.jacksonATbtinternet.com)
I was in a band with a guy who played on one of the singles, but I'm not sure which one. He knew Shanne pretty well still in the 80's when we went backstage with the MTCH, and Shane at a Pogues gig (we got to video at the Playhouse). Went by the name Fritz van Helsing, used to run Strangled fanzine when it started. Anyone any other info?

I would never of bought the album, if it wasnt for the availability of the live recordings posted here. Its a shame that they have been removed, these live songs only gave young people a chance to here shane macgowan in his early days

Gavin Douglas (gavinscompok1ATaol.com)
AS the ex nips guitarist who played on gabrielle & vengance(and co wrote) and on the happy song session for polydor and all the live stuff, i am so pissed off at not getting any royalties, and i know shanne is as well. Give us a break.

www.slsknet.org which is a really great, free mp3 site has the Bops/Babes/Booze/'n' Bovver, Only the End of the Beginning, & the Tits of Soho albums. I definitely suggest this site if you're looking for MP3s of any sort or just the Nips in particular. Soulseek is way better than Napster ever was and has tons of old rare punk and anything else you wanna lookup! I just downloaded End of the Beginning. Great stuff! CHEERS!!!!!

Well John, you can pick up the Nips 'Bops Babes..' at some retail stores, or http://www.netsoundsmusic.com for as low as 7 GBP. As for the live stuff... you can download in the multimedia section if you are happy w. mp3s. If not, try posting at www.shanemacgowan.de for someone to trade/sell you the live albums.

Can't Say No

lyrics: MacGowan / Bradley / Douglas / Harrison

Shane definitely says "Don't like "freaks" that I can't see
Oooooooohhhhh
and hes definitely saying "living in" but then I cant figure out what he says after that.
I would have a guess but it dont make sense..
thanks so much for the nips site, Its great to hear the songs.

PS In partial answer to the question about Stan Brennan's whereabouts, didn't he marry Sophie Richmond? (McLaren's secretary in the Glitterbest era)

I think she also managed the Nips in their final days...

What an amazing site!

One minor query though - are you 100% sure that the Soho version of Gabrielle came out *after* the Chiswick version? I bought it at the time and unless my memory's playing tricks with me, I could've sworn that the Chiswick edition didn't come out until later. The fact that Shane specifically mentions on the live LP that it's out on Chiswick would tend to argue against the idea that the Soho version was pressed to tie-in with that tour... but what the hell do I know?!

Hi I saw an interview with shane on belgian tv a couple of years ago where he sang a song.
He was too drunk to properly pronunciate the original title or artist, but I could make out some of the lyrics:
I fuck yer arse/and then /you'll suck me till I bleed/...gibberish.../and in the land of sunshine/.../but when the brits have raped and mutilated you/etc.
Anybody know the name of the song or the original artist?

I was involved with the band and Soho records back in the late 70's, there are some of my pictures in the gallery section, and its great to see such a good site dedicated to the Nips. Sadly I've lost contact with Shane over the years, but a friend still sees him now and again and he seems to be well as can be expected. I must look out some more of the loads of pictures I took at the time and let the site have them. Keep up the good work.

I believe I can fill in some of the blanks on the song So Pissed Off. Because of MacGowan's heavy accent, he is difficult to understand with clarity. As a result these lyrics may or may not be correct. Listen to the song and decide for yourself.

??? we don't give a shit
About ??? 70's ???
Spend the whole day oi now I’m pissed
Someone hands over me a lot of foreign kids

So I'm so pissed off, Fuck all that
So pissed off, Fuck all that
So pissed off, Don't need no one
So pissed off, I’m too much fun

Everyday I meet with the boys from school
We go down the street, play a bit of pool
Put a coin in the juke, ???
??? He likes no one

So pissed off, Fuck all that
So pissed off, Fuck all that
So pissed off, Don't need no one
So pissed off, too much fun

Well I don't need ???
Don't need to read about ???
Don't need no ???
SAS Bastards the 70's are ???

So pissed off, Fuck all that
So pissed off, Fuck all that
So pissed off, Don't need no one
So pissed off, I’m too much fun

So pissed off, with the disco beat
So pissed off, with the people I meet
So pissed off, with the lively arts
So pissed off, I’m gonna hit you with bats

So pissed off, I get so tight
So pissed off, I'm feeling alright
So pissed off, ???
So pissed off, went right to work

Andy P. Davies (andydavies(AT)oportorecords.fsnet.co.uk)
What a fantastic website! Dedicated to one of the greatest acts of the late seventies London scene. I was a teenage Nips fan living in Birmingham at the time, following their story via the pages of the rock inkies, pop mags and John Peel Show. I can actually remember where I was when I read the piece about them splitting up in Sounds.
In the early eighties I was after getting more interested in folk and country music, courtesy of the Johnny Cash, Clancy Brothers and Dubliners records owned by my parents. Then one night in mid-1984 I heard Peel mention the Nips and then play Dark Streets of London by The Pogues for the first time.
I was now of an age where I could get to gigs of The Pogues and The Men They Couldn't Hang. I think I saw The Pogues 53 times in total and the The Men 26 times.
Last New Years Eve my cousin Noel and his partner Helen invited me to a party at his house in Bromsgrove. In attendance was Pete Hember, his wife Sarah and their two children. Pete met Sarah whilst getting me out of a ruck at the front of the stage in Birmingham Powerhouse, during which Shanne of (TMTCH) made the band stop playing. So funny to think about that, now!
Anyway, please keep up this wonderful site. And, I hope you will not object to me creating a link to this site from my Oporto Records website at www.oportorecords.co.uk

All my best wishes,
Andy P. Davies

This is a great site, have you told Shanne about it? I'm sure she'd love this one.

matt-

you got those tabs I sent right? I'm working on more. Everyone else who enjoys the nips and plays guitar, bass, or drums should send in tabs as well!

I do have the lyrics to the other Nips songs (as much as I can decipher)... they are on the server, just not linked to any of the discography pages yet. (see ~mroman/lyrics/) I really want to get the discography finished next, but my digital camera keeps breaking!
I also plan to put guitar tabs up, but I'll need help on that (thanks so far Joel).
Check back soon, I've been making some updates and they will be up shortly. I recently got a copy of the "Bondage" zine that Shane wrote, so that will go up as well.

just can't get enough of this site. For those of you who play guitar or bass, here is the bass line for happy song:
G|
D|
A| 12 12 9 7 9 7 7 5 4 5 4 4 2 0 2 0~~~ |
E|

I hope that comes out right. It sounds right to me.

oh, by the way, your link to this file: The Nips-101_Club_03-King Of The Bop.mp3 is broken. It is just a syntax thing, you have an underscore in the link between The_Bop, whereas the file doesn't. Just trying to help!

Best (and only) Nips website on the web... Keep up the good work. Also, are you gonna add the lyrics to the other nips songs (other than the ones you already have on the site) or are they impossible to find ? And do you know were I could get nips guitar and bass tabs ?

GREAT WORK !

Is there not a second one of Shane with a mad-greased-up-quiff also? I could be wrong but I think there is.
