THE JAM

THE JAM are Paul Weller (guitar/vocals), Bruce Foxton (bass) and Rick Buck (drums). They're from Surrey and they did have a piano player but he's disappeared. Paul Weller says he's influenced by the early Who and mid sixties stuff in general, particularly soul. They do a 60's type set including "Route 66", "So Sad About Us" by the Who, "Midnight Hour" etc, but they also play lots of Paul Weller's songs which are fucking brilliant, such as "In The City", which is one of the best songs I've ever heard and should be a single, and "Taking Your Love" which has a demented Dr Feelgood-type riff.
Paul Weller's a born guitar hero with a frenzied style that's a bit like Wilko and a bit like Townshend used to be. Bruce Foxton is a great bassist but he needs a haircut and Rick Buck just smashes away at his kit and don't fuck around. They all wear matching black suits and look sharp.
Down at upstairs at Ronnie Scott's a couple of weeks ago they had to play to a bunch of pathetic disco kids plus a few punks who were there to support the cause, but they did alright. The first set was OK but Bruce Foxton had problems with his bass and got annoyed. Later on Paul Weller smashed a guitar to bits which was great and they went off for a while. But the second set really took off with "Goin Back Home", "Heat Wave", and "So Sad About Us", one of the best songs the Who ever did and the Jam's version is great. Pogo-dancing broke out
