Battle Bot

A battle bot to compete against 5 other coworkers. We're building our own arena and then battling them at Beetle Bot weight (3lbs). We aren't allowing Lithium batteries for fear of toxic gasses and uncontrolled fires.

I decided to use an Adafruit Feather nRF52840 that can bluetooth and be used with the Adafruit BlueFruit app. The Adafruit BlueFruit app can connect to the Adafruit bluetooth boards and has a game controller in it. This made for quick and easy setup of the wheels and weapon. After research I decided to use the WEKA 20A Dual Brushed Motor Controller with 2x DartBox V2 Dragon motors. I'm using a JCR-RC Mini 35A AM32 ESC with a SunnySky X2814 1450KV brushless motor for the weapon. I found I could get a 12V 1600mAh (2x5S/S, MH-2/3A1600B) NiMH battery pack from Battery Space. I first charged the batteries at 15v (max) and at 160mA (max) for 14 hours for their first charge and then they were ready to go.

First setup

I soldered everything together and got a basic app running using the BlueFruit app. I was able to drive the motors and was quite surprised at the amount of power coming from them.

Connecting and running the bluefruit app.
First successful drive of the motors
